What are karats?

Understanding your metal

The term "karat" (abbreviated as "kt" or "ct") refers to the purity of gold, indicating the proportion of gold in an alloy out of 24 parts. Pure gold is 24 karats, meaning it is 100% gold with no other metals mixed in. However, pure gold is too soft for most jewelry applications, so it is typically alloyed with other metals like copper, silver, nickel, or palladium to enhance its strength and durability.
